I was able to attend Heroes Convention in Charlotte, NC on Friday June 4, 2010. Talk about an amazing event. Heroes Con may be the best pure comic book convention in the country. I was listening to the Comics Geek Speak podcast and heard an advertisement for it. The family and I went to vacation this year to Tybee Island, GA. Since Charlotte, NC was not a huge amount out of the way, I decided to come back through and check it out. I was really blown away. I only allowed myself about five hours of time at the con and it was nowhere near enough time. There were over 300 artists there signing autographs and selling sketches and prints. Some of the big names in attendance included Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame and Michael Golden, who I remember best from the Micronauts. Also in attendance was Kid Domino. He is an artist from Indianapolis, IN. I have one of his prints of Captain America on my office wall. I am definitely going to consider a return to Heroes Con in the future.
Here is a low cost option to the Comic Cubes, Comic Drawers. These are like your traditional cardboard comic boxes, but have a slide out drawer with built-in dividers. Looks like the closest place that stocks these is:
Fantasy Books
1113 E. Main Ave.
Belleville, IL 62220
618.235.0844
They cost about $10 each, which isn’t bad considering a standard long comic box is about $6. Shipping can be a bit expensive if you have to mail order them.

I am considering ordering some of these for my comics I plan on keeping.
Don’t forget that Saturday May 1st, 2010 is Free Comic Book Day. According to the store locator, Castle Perilous in Carbondale, IL is participating. I plan on swinging by there and also Campus Comics (aka World’s Finest Comics). If I get motivated, I may also drive to Cape Girardeau, MO to the Cape Comic Con. John Wesley Shipp who played the Flash on the CBS TV show several years is scheduled to appear.
I purchased Ender’s Game: Battle School TPB at the Metropolis Comic Convention. It is outstanding. I read the novel by Orson Scott Card and really enjoyed it as well, so I hope that hasn’t biased towards the graphic novel to much. I also enjoyed Card’s run on Ultimate Iron Man as well. If you are looking for a good comic or novel to read, I definitely recommend this book.

These look really cool. Comic Cubes are designed to be a nice way to organize your comics. I may have to add some of these to my Christmas/birthday/want list.

For those of you who are podcast listeners, here is a pretty good podcast about comics. Comic Geek Speak covers a wide range of comics from Marvel to DC to independents. From time to time they will digress into discussions about Lost, board games, etc., but the podcast is very entertaining overall. There is some profanity from time to time for those who might be easily offended, so be advised.
I attended the Metropolis Comic Convention on March 6th & 7th, 2010. I had a great time, though there were not as many people who attended as I would have liked to have seen. I will mention an artist, Terry Huddleston, extremely cool and very funny guy. During some of the con’s slow points, which were many, he would hang out around the table. You can find out more about Terry at his DeviantArt website or his professional web site, www.heroespress.com.
But on to the story. Also in attendance at the con was Gary Friedrich. You can read about Gary Friedrich on Wikipedia. Suffice it to say, Gary is the creator of the modern day Ghost Rider character. Gary came to my table and started thumbing though some of my books. He pulled out Original Ghost Rider #8 (I think.) which I believe is a reprint of the first modern Ghost Rider story. Gary said he needed to run back to his table to grab his money. I told him to just take the comic, because it will make for a good con story for me. So, to summarize, I gave Gary Friedrich, the creator of the modern Ghost Rider a copy of a reprint of one of his original stories. The kicker though, was that Gary took the comic back to his table and stuck it in a pile for people to purchase and have signed. Oh well. 🙂
I will be attending the Metropolis Comic Convention as a dealer March 6th and 7th. I am looking forward to it.
If you happen to come across this space, keep watching. Information about a comic convention in Harrisburg, IL will hopefully be posted here soon.
